LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Taylor Menke scored 22 points, Anne Rohrig added 12 and Friend won its first state championship in girls basketball with a 44-43 victory over Humphrey St. Francis in the Class D1 final on Saturday.
Rohrig scored in the lane to give the Bulldogs (28-1) the lead early in the fourth quarter, and they were able to hold off the Flyers (25-3). Menke made a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left for a four-point lead, and St. Francis’ Jacey Olmer made a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left.
Christa Brockhaus had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Flyers, and Maggie McPhillips added 12 points.
Neither team led by more than four points.
Friend made 6 of 11 free throws compared with 14 of 18 for St. Francis. The Bulldogs converted St. Francis’ 20 turnovers into 13 points and outscored the Flyers 12-4 on second-chance baskets.
