BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The city of Birmingham is expanding its civil rights trail.
Officials are holding a ribbon-cutting Saturday afternoon to open 4 miles of walking paths between downtown Birmingham and neighborhoods that played a role in the civil rights movement.
The city already has a historic district downtown that highlights the civil rights era, and the new project expands the idea into more residential areas.
Educational signs will line both sides of Center Street, which is part of the trail and served as an unofficial dividing line between black and white neighborhoods during segregation.
The project is the first completed segment of almost 30 miles of trails that will be funded by a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The trails will be open to walkers, runners and bicycles.
