PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A minor league ballpark in western Michigan is expected to get more fire hydrants after a January blaze that destroyed part of the stadium.

The fire department in Kent County’s Plainfield Township tells WOOD-TV (https://bit.ly/NF6FOb ) that Fifth Third Ballpark will have at least five hydrants, up from two. The station says the ballpark near Grand Rapids also is adding valves where fire crews can hook up hoses.

Fire investigators have said that a trash container placed next to a space heater caused the fire. Multiple suites were destroyed and part of the roof collapsed. No one was injured.

This season’s home opener is April 8. The park is home to the West Michigan Whitecaps, a single-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
