BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a corrections officer has been assaulted by an inmate at the state prison in Buckeye.

Arizona Department of Corrections officials say a female officer at the minimum security Eagle Point Unit of the Lewis complex was walking through a common area of the unit about 7 a.m. Thursday.

They say the inmate apparently used a small, weighted bag to strike the officer several times.

The officer was able to get away and call for help.

Prison staff locked down the unit and DOC officials say the inmate is being held for questioning.

The officer was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries to the head and face. Her name hasn’t been released.

In January, another inmate at the Lewis complex assaulted a corrections officer before being restrained.
