LOS ANGELES (AP) - A mother and child have been found dead after a fire in a Los Angeles garage - raising to 11 the number of fire-related deaths in the city this year.
Firefighters went to east 50th Street shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and found smoke coming from a garage that had been converted to living space.
The blaze was doused in less than 10 minutes.
Fire officials say crews found a 2-year-old boy in the garage and tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The boy’s mother was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are trying to determine whether the garage was legally converted and whether it had a smoke alarm.
Authorities say many of the homes where fires claimed 11 lives this year lacked alarms.
