SEATTLE (AP) - Michael Filipovic (fil-uh-POH’-vik) has been appointed the new federal public defender for Western Washington.

His appointment was announced Wednesday by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. He replaces Tom Hillier who retired after 38 years in the Seattle office, 28 of them as chief.

The 61-year-old Filipovic has been with the office since 1990 and has been first assistant federal public defender since 2004.
