TARBORO, N.C. (AP) - John H. Walker has retired as publisher of The Daily Southerner of Tarboro.
The 63-year-old Walker suffered a stroke last April. He told the newspaper (https://bit.ly/1fFjr5c) that while there were no visible side-effects, the daily rigors of the job made retirement an easier decision.
Walker has worked at 14 newspapers in six states over a 48-year career.
Calvin Adkins, who has worked for the Tarboro newspaper for a total of 22 years, has been named news editor, taking charge of the day-to-day newsroom operations.
Adkins started at The Daily Southerner as a stringer in 1988 and became full-time in 1993. He left the newspaper in 1997, but returned in 2000 to handle a variety of responsibilities, including sports editor and photographer.
