MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis Police have charged a driver in a hit-and-run crash that killed a man who was walking on the sidewalk near his home.

Curteria Luellyn, 21, has been charged with vehicular homicide.

The victim, 59-year-old Curtis Echols, was struck Saturday night while walking on Hugenot Street. He died at the scene after being struck by a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu.

Police said in a release Monday morning that Luellyn was arrested after the car’s owner called police. Police were told Luellyn had borrowed the car and returned it with damage.

A passenger with Luellyn, 19-year-old Tomisha Thompson, was arrested for a pending warrant for theft.

Police say the car left the roadway and struck Echols, who was dragged through a yard and then back toward the street.
