NEW YORK (AP) - About 500 people attending an event at a performance space in lower Manhattan had to be evacuated from the building after firefighters discovered cracks in a mezzanine balcony.
Officials say firefighters were responding to a smoke condition at 172 Norfolk St. at about 7:30 p.m. Monday when attendees alerted them that the balcony was shaking.
Firefighters inspected the balcony and found structural cracks. Officials say the building has been indefinitely closed until Department of Buildings determines the safety of the structure.
The 1849 gothic Revival synagogue is home to the Angel Orensanz Foundation Center for the Arts and is used as an art gallery and performance space.
