SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Opera has voted to hold its last note a little bit longer.
U-T San Diego says (https://bit.ly/1fhmFk1 ) after an overwhelming majority voted earlier this month to permanently close down, the opera’s board chose Monday to delay the shutdown by two weeks while it considers its options.
Monday’s vote came after an outcry from employees, fans and politicians trying to keep the opera alive after 49 years.
General Artistic Director and CEO Ian Campbell told the board the institution with its $15 million annual budget is so broke that closing was the only viable option.
The company planned to close and liquidate the day after its final performance of “Don Quixote” on April 13, but the deadline was extended until April 28 after a five-hour board meeting.
