KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Kalamazoo College says it plans to raise tuition by more than 4 percent next fall.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1moy2b0 ) it’s the third time in four years that the private, liberal arts college has increased tuition by 4 percent. The school says the biggest increase in recent years was 6.5 percent for the 2008-2009 academic year.

A letter sent home to students and their parents by acting President Mickey McDonald says tuition and room and board will be $49,740 for 2014-2015 academic year. McDonald tells the newspaper that they’re trying to balance affordability with the need to provide revenue for programs.

Tuition will be going up 4.35 percent, to $40,728, while room and board will increase 2.4 percent.
