APLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - Fire department members have found their former chief dead after a car accident in northern Iowa.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier says (https://bit.ly/1dHFMFB ) the crash occurred early Saturday on a rural highway west of Austinville in Butler County.

Officials say a car driven by 59-year-old Keith Oelmann ran off a bridge and rolled. The Aplington Fire Department responded to the accident call. The current chief, Scott Poppen, says firefighters didn’t realize their former chief was involved until they found his body.

The crash is being investigated.
