DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - Decatur police say a South Carolina man who was arrested on a public intoxication charge has died while in custody.

Authorities say 49-year-old Mary Earl Whisman of Columbia, S.C. was arrested for trying to interfere with police who were trying to take a relative into custody early Sunday in a pub’s parking lot.

Police say Whisman was taken to jail and was also charged with resisting arrest. Authorities say an officer found him unresponsive when breakfast was being delivered around 5 a.m.

Whisman was taken to Decatur Morgan Hospital and was pronounced dead.

Police say the man’s relatives mentioned that he has a history of heart problems.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation will review the case and the man’s autopsy will be performed by the Alabama Department of Forensic Science.
