PEEKSKILL, N.Y. (AP) - Firefighters say a three-alarm fire coursed through a 176-year-old shop building in suburban New York, but it was boarded up for renovation, and no one was been injured.
Peekskill Fire Chief Robert Fiorio tells The Journal News (https://lohud.us/1kcvfjR) that Sunday’s blaze in the Peekskill Central Market building left extensive smoke and water damage.
The three-story, 1838 brick building on Main Street once was a hardware store. A developer is rehabbing it as retail space and rental apartments.
The fire was reported around 2:15 a.m. Sunday. Fiorio says it started in a first-floor trash container and quickly spread through heating and air-conditioning ducts.
More than 75 firefighters responded. It took about 75 minutes to get the flames under control.
The fire’s cause is under investigation, but Fiorio says it’s considered accidental.
