NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) - A chase and a shootout have left a suspect dead and two North Carolina police officers recovering from wounds.

A man New Bern police initially stopped for questioning was shot to death after fleeing from officers late Friday. The two wounded officers were being treated Saturday at Vident Medical Center in Greenville, where New Bern Police Chief Toussaint Summers was expected to describe what happened.

The names of the slain man and the injured officers have not been released. The State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe, as it does in all shootings that involve police.
