SOUTH FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Police say they’ve successfully removed a hand grenade from the curb of a Long Island street in New York after a pedestrian spotted the explosive and called 911.
A Nassau County Police Department spokesman said the call came in just after noon Friday. The grenade, which had the pin in it, was discovered near a Long Island Railroad overpass in South Farmingdale, which is about 39 miles east of Manhattan.
The police spokesman said detectives with the arson bomb squad removed the grenade by using a robot, which put the device in a special container. He said eventually the grenade will be detonated in a remote area.
Police are investigating who might have owned the explosive.
