HELENA, Mont. (AP) - The U.S. Forest Service plans to close 157 miles of roads to wheeled motorized use in the Helena National Forest while leaving 289 miles available.
The Independent Record reports (https://bit.ly/1gxNAsF) in a story on Friday that the agency released its final environmental impact statement and a draft record of decision for the non-winter Blackfoot Travel Plan for the Lincoln Ranger District.
The agency’s plan also calls for decommissioning or reclamation of 212 miles of roads. About 4 miles of new motorized trails would be added.
The plan has non-motorized travelers getting 21 miles of new trails.
The agency says that in developing the plan it tried to create road-free areas where big game can seek refuge during hunting seasons.
