PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A convicted rapist who eluded Massachusetts authorities for 34 years while living a quiet life in Maine before he was caught and sentenced last year has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to his years as a free man.
The Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/1lqSP0d ) reports that Gary Irving, serving up to 40 years in Massachusetts for raping three girls in 1978, pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in Portland to being a fugitive in possession of firearms and aggravated identity theft.
The charges against the 53-year-old Irving stem from his escape to Maine from Rockland, Mass., in 1979, after he was convicted of rape.
Irving lived as a free man in Gorham using his brother’s name, marrying and raising two children.
He’ll be sentenced on the federal charges in the future.
