PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Court records show former Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd has paid the $3,000 fine and $100 special assessment fee he owed in the Southern District of Alabama after he was sentenced on a federal charge of witness tampering.
Chief Judge William H. Steele earlier this month sentenced Byrd to six months’ home confinement, followed by six months’ probation, plus a $3,000 fine and $100 special assessment fee in the corruption case.
The charge stemmed from the June 2012 arrest of a man accused of stealing a deputy’s patrol car and leading officers on a chase into Mobile County, Ala. The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1gIEPgz) Byrd admitted kicking the handcuffed man twice in the groin, then ordering deputies to erase or destroy evidence of the assault.
