HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County school officials are going to let teachers decide when they want classes to begin in the fall.
The school board earlier this month approved a tentative 2014-15 calendar that calls for classes to begin Aug. 12 for teachers and Aug. 18 for students. However, Supt. Milton Kuykendall warned at the time that the issue might be revisited if state legislators were successful in negating a 2012 law that mandated later starting dates beginning in 2014-15.
The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/1gIIDyc ) school leaders got their wish this week when Gov. Phil Bryant signed a bill rolling back the law.
Given the feedback already from teachers unhappy with the later starting date, Kuykendall said he expects the revised calendar will be the one favored by teachers.
