MANTEO, N.C. (AP) - Officials are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge with longer hours at the visitor center, interactive exhibits and a visit from an author.
The event is scheduled for Friday, when the visitor center will stay open four hours longer than usual, until 8 p.m. Birthday cake will be served.
When a large parcel of land was set aside in March 1984 for the refuge, it included an area once known as Buffalo City, a lumber town that at one time was home to about 900 people. Author Suzanne Tate wrote a book about that time titled “Logs and Moonshine: Tales of Buffalo City, N.C.”
The book includes interviews and photos from former Buffalo City residents.
