FARMINGTON, Maine (AP) - The University of Maine at Farmington is investigating after someone sent students a hoax email claiming that the school’s president had died of a stroke.
The email sent Monday announcing President Kathryn Foster’s death claimed to be from Associate Provost Robert Lively Jr., and said he had been named interim president. The university responded within a half hour, telling students that the email was a fake.
The Morning Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1hdhW3v ) reports that the email also contained a link which purportedly had details about the death, but actually led to a pornographic website.
Campus police and technology services are investigating, but the matter has been discussed with the district attorney’s office.
Foster said in a statement: “I am fine, though deeply saddened that our community has been subjected to this fraud.”
