MONTEREY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Allegan County health officials say it’s safe again to have contact with water from a southwestern Michigan river and creek contaminated with liquid manure five weeks ago.
Authorities issued a no-contact warning Feb. 17 after discovering that liquid manure from an open-air lagoon at Schaendorf farm in Monterey Township leaked from and spread into Bear Creek and the Rabbit River.
The site is about 25 miles south-southwest of Grand Rapids.
MLive.com (https://bit.ly/1o4H7KI ) says investigators determined that a valve failed between the farm’s stormwater system and the lagoon.
The county health department says water samples collected Monday both upstream and downstream from the spill, showed bacteria levels no longer were significant.
