WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say an inmate had ingested drugs before becoming unresponsive in the Black Hawk County Jail and later dying in a Waterloo hospital.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation announced Thursday that an inquiry into the death of 34-year-old James Terrell Taylor on March 7 found he’d ingested drugs before his arrest.
He was taken to the jail after being arrested on two warrants for failure to appear in court on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance.
Taylor became unresponsive in a jail intake area. A deputy who found Taylor provided emergency aid, and he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy determined the cause of death was acute amphetamine and methamphetamine intoxication.
The death was ruled accidental.
