DARRINGTON, Wash. (AP) - The Washington Transportation Department and Snohomish County have opened an alternate route for travel to and from Darrington, which lost its most-direct link to Interstate 5 last weekend when the mudslide covered Highway 530 at Oso.
They opened the Mountain Loop Highway on Wednesday, which connects Darrington to Granite Falls. It’s a 1 hour-40 minute trip on a gravel road with potholes and no gas stations. The Mountain Loop Highway is closed during the winter by snow.
The department says the preferred detour for Darrington travel is taking Highway 530 off Highway 20 at Rockport.
