ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Madison County sheriff’s officials say a teen who benefited from a $31,000 bank error told investigators that the money came from his grandmother’s estate.
Sheriff’s officials say several customers at the 18-year-old man’s bank have the same name, and a teller mistakenly deposited the money into the wrong account on March 7.
Sheriff’s officials say the man withdrew $20,000 and spent $5,000 using his ATM card. Sheriff’s deputies told the man that the bank wants the money back, and the man said he’d try resolving the issue at the branch to avoid jail time. Authorities say the man never returned to the bank.
Investigator Doug Martin tells the Athens-Banner Herald (https://bit.ly/QgJcEG) no charges have been filed yet, but bank officials say they’ll press charges if they money isn’t returned.
