ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A man convicted of capital murder has been sentenced to life in prison in the beating death of a former high school classmate.
The Roanoke Times (https://bit.ly/1gYeo0q) reports a judge sentenced 25-year-old Carey Shane Padgett in Roanoke County Circuit Court on Wednesday to five life terms, plus 175 years. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty.
Padgett pleaded guilty last October to capital murder, abduction and robbery. He was arrested in July 2010 after he told police he smoked marijuana with 18-year-old Cara Marie Holley in a field, and then beat her with a tire iron and buried her body in Franklin County.
They were classmates at Roanoke’s Patrick Henry High School.
