House ends break for in-state grad students at UVM

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont House has passed a bill that would scrap a big tuition break given to in-state resident graduate students at the University of Vermont.

A miscellaneous education bill containing that change passed after the House rejected an amendment that would have limited ending the tuition discount to some of the roughly 70 non-medical graduate programs at UVM.

Since 1959, UVM has operated under a so-called “40-percent rule,” in which in-state tuition can’t be more than 40 percent of what is charged to students from outside Vermont.

UVM officials told lawmakers that sets up a ratio that makes it impossible for the school to price online graduate courses competitively.

The measure now goes to the Senate.
