OAK HILL, W.Va. (AP) - Authorities are investigating a weekend fire in Fayette County that killed one woman and critically injured another.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office tells media outlets that the fire began early Sunday morning at a house near Oak Hill.

Firefighters found both women lying on the floor just inside the front door. Each suffered extensive burns.

One woman died Monday at Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was identified by deputies Tuesday as 28-year-old Cheryl Ward of Oak Hill. The other woman, 39-year-old Jamie Castillo, remains in critical condition. Castillo’s hometown wasn’t released.

Police say the victims didn’t live at the residence but the owners knew one of them.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.
