MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont House has given preliminary approval to repealing a big tuition break for Vermont resident graduate students at the University of Vermont.
UVM officials say they need to remove the requirement that in-state graduate students pay just 40 percent of the tuition paid by non-residents. Cynthia Belliveau, dean of continuing and distance education, says the school needs to shrink the differential so it can reduce the cost of its online graduate and certificate courses.
The House endorsed the measure Tuesday as part of a wide-ranging bill on miscellaneous education law changes.
Officials say raising tuition for in-state students to levels paid by out-of-staters is not contemplated.
An amendment is expected to be offered that would limit the changes as the bill comes up for final action Wednesday.
