Snow expected in North Carolina mountains

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Spring started last week but winter weather is headed to the mountains of western North Carolina.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for 10 counties in the western part of the state until midnight Tuesday.

Forecasters say 2 to 4 inches of snow are possible around Boone, Newland and Spruce Pine. Up to 5 inches of snow are possible at the highest elevations near Waynesville.

The advisory is in effect until 8 a.m. Tuesday in the southwestern mountains. Up to 2 inches of snow are possible at higher elevations around Murphy.

It was snowing in Boone and Jefferson early Tuesday.
