SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Authorities say a sport utility vehicle that crashed in Colorado and injured five students and two adults belongs to the McLaughlin School District in South Dakota.
McLaughlin is on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation that straddles the South Dakota-North Dakota border. School Superintendent Patricia Stone declined comment to The Associated Press, citing privacy. Tribal Chairman Dave Archambault (AHR’-sham-boh) II didn’t immediately return calls.
The Colorado State Patrol says the students and adults were in an SUV that hit ice, drifted into the median on Interstate 25 and rolled at least twice Monday about 16 miles south of the Wyoming border. They were taken to hospitals in Fort Collins and Loveland with what authorities said were serious injuries.
Officials say the children appeared to be the age of middle school students.
