TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) - Limited ferry service has resumed between Galveston and Bolivar (BAH’-lee-vur) Peninsula after a weekend oil spill closed the Houston Ship Channel.

Officials on Monday afternoon began daylight-only ferry service, with the schedule Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT.

The oil spill happened Saturday afternoon following a collision between a barge and a ship just inside the mouth to Galveston Bay. State officials shut down ferry service at the request of the Coast Guard amid safety concerns.

Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Danny Perez says the decision to expand ferry service will be a day-to-day deliberation.

The free ferries haul thousands of vehicles and pedestrians daily from State Highway 87 between Galveston and Bolivar Peninsula.
