BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The chamber of commerce in Bennington, Vt., has lost many of its computer files to a virus.
The Bennington Banner reports (https://bit.ly/Jea059) last month, a message appeared on the chamber’s computers demanding a $400 ransom be paid, or the computer files would become locked.
Chamber director Joann Erenhouse said the chamber was about to pay when a power failure caused it to lose contact with those making the demand. She said the only thing that remained were financial records. A new computer system was needed.
The virus is called CryptoLocker, which encrypts a user’s hard drive, effectively putting their photos, documents, and other data under lock and key, unless they pay a ransom within a certain amount of time.
Erenhouse said the chamber now has better backup systems.
