CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A Wheeling Park student will compete in the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest next month in Washington, D.C.

Austin Gage won the state competition in Charleston earlier this month. He received $200 in addition to advancing to the national contest.

Wheeling Park received a $500 stipend that will be used to buy poetry books.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation sponsor the recitation contest. The goal is to encourage high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance and competition.
