GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - A man wanted in connection with the deaths of two women and the assault of a third was found dead of a gunshot wound Monday after crashing his car.
Menice Montell Smith crashed a car owned by one of the women into a tree while being pursued by officers, said Greensboro Police spokeswoman Susan Danielsen.
When the officers reached the car, they found Smith had shot himself. He was pronounced dead at Moses Cone Hospital.
Danielsen identified the deceased women as Jamie Lynn Goode, 36, and Michaela Dionne Brewington, 46, both of whom were found dead in their homes. Goode had been shot, Danielsen said. The cause of Brewington’s death has not been determined. Smith was driving Brewington’s car when he shot himself and crashed, Danielsen said.
Danielsen said Deborah Kay Huffine, 52, is hospitalized. Danielsen said initial reports indicated Huffine was beaten with a crowbar.
Smith was a truck driver whose company was contracted to drive for the U.S. Postal Service. Danielsen said he was acquainted with Huffine and Brewington, who were both employed by the postal service. Investigators said they don’t know how Smith knew Goode.
Police haven’t determined a motive for the shootings, and an investigation is continuing.
