HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Marshall University will host an Appalachian studies conference that’s expected to draw up to 1,000 people from across the region.

The 37th annual Appalachian Studies Association Conference begins Friday and runs through Sunday.

This year’s theme is “New Appalachia: Known Realities and Imagined Possibilities.”

Conference chair Linda Spatig says Silas House will deliver the keynote on contemporary Appalachian issues.

There also will be a series of three “New Appalachia” plenary sessions designed to explore stories from and about the region.

Other activities include presentations of academic papers, workshops, readings, films and performance.
