HALLOWELL, Maine (AP) - Maine is helping its communities reduce populations of invasive green crabs officials say threaten shellfish.

The Department of Marine Resources is holding a workshop on Friday on how to trap the crabs. Officials say they will share traps designs and the permitting process.

Registration is required for the workshop in the Hallowell Annex at the Natural Resource Service Center building.

Last month Gov. Paul LePage ordered the creation of a task force to study and combat invasive European green crabs. Fishermen blame the crabs for decimating clam flats.

The species has been reported in Maine since the early 1900s, but in recent years populations have spiked.
