DENVER (AP) - This week’s Bill To Watch in the Colorado Legislature
THE BILL:
Senate Bill 158, to update recall election procedures.
WHAT IT DOES:
The bill would update arcane language in Colorado’s election law as it relates to recall elections. Sounds simple, but it’s quite controversial because Republicans just last year knocked off two Democrats in the state Senate through recalls. Expect the bill to spark strong partisan bickering as the GOP accuses Democrats of trying to change the rules because they lost.
WHO WANTS IT?
Democrats say the update is needed to resolve confusion among elections administrators.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Legislative analysts put the bill’s price tag at “minimal.”
WHERE IT STANDS:
The bill has passed a Senate committee Friday and awaits consideration by the full Senate.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:
“Nobody benefits from chaos. Especially voters,” - Sen. Matt Jones, D-Louisville.
