SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A woman is dead and a man is injured after they were hit by a semitrailer while changing a flat tire.
Utah Highway Patrol officials say 27-year-old Mailefihi Tuaone of West Valley City was killed in the crash late Sunday, a little before midnight.
Troopers say a Toyota Corolla was traveling north on Interstate 15 in Salt Lake City when the left rear tire went flat. The man and woman stopped in the emergency lane and got out to fix the tire.
Authorities say a passing truck’s trailer hit the pair and killed the woman. The 25-year-old man, Monte Keiaho of Logan, was critically injured but is expected to survive.
Officials say they’re investigating whether the truck drifted into the shoulder or whether the two were in the travel lane.
