HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) - A tribal councilwoman, a lawyer and New Haven mayor are receiving awards from Quinnipiac University School of Law’s Black Law Students Association.

Fatima Dames, a civil rights activist who serves on the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council, and John Rose Jr., an attorney who was the state’s first African American partner of a law firm, will receive the Thurgood Marshall Award at 7 p.m. Thursday in the School of Law Center. New Haven Mayor Toni Harp, who was elected last year, will receive the group’s public service award at the event, which is free and open to the public.

The Thurgood Marshall Award is given in honor of the first African-American appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court and recognizes those who exemplified Marshall’s dedication to improving society.
