LONG LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities in the northwestern Lower Peninsula say a 29-year-old man was fatally shot in a confrontation with a female acquaintance in her Traverse City-area apartment.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle (https://bit.ly/1eBW80d ) identifies the dead man as Roger R. Howard of Garfield Township.

The Grand Traverse City sheriff’s department says a 27-year-old woman told investigators she picked up Howard at his apartment Friday evening and drove him to her Long Lake Township home, where they started fighting.

She says she told him he wasn’t welcome in the home, but he entered anyway while she was upstairs checking on her two children and a third child in her care.

The woman says she got a handgun to defend herself, Howard grabbed it and it fired.

The department says it’s investigating.
