NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - State police say a woman was killed and a man was seriously injured when a car struck them while they changed a flat tire on the shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike.
The Star-Ledger (https://bit.ly/1gnvg6q) reports the accident occurred around 6:50 p.m. Friday, on a southbound stretch near milepost 107 in Newark. The two people involved were Rutgers University students.
Santa Pumpura, a 21-year-old from Latvia who lived in Piscataway, and 23-year-old Halim Habib of Budd Lake were trying to change a tire on Pumpura’s car when another vehicle drifted into the shoulder and struck them.
Pumpura and Habib were both taken to a hospital, where Pumpura died a short time later. Habib remained hospitalized Saturday in good condition.
The driver of the other vehicle, identified only as a 58-year-old Basking Ridge man, was not seriously injured.
No charges have been filed, but the investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing.
Pumpura was a junior working toward a finance degree at Rutgers School of Business who also spoke English, Russian, Latvian and German, friends told the newspaper said. Habib is a senior studying at Rutgers’ School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.
