TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a Tucson police officer.
Police say 35-year-old Juan Jose Ortega was taken into custody Friday after a standoff.
Officers responded to a call about a suicidal man. When police caught up to Ortega on the street, they say he pulled out a large knife and attempted to stab one of the officers in the head.
Police say Ortega waived the knife at a second officer while he was trying to get away.
They say Ortega fled into a yard and held the knife at his chest and refused to put it down, sparking a standoff.
After several hours, negotiators were able to convince Ortega to surrender.
He’s being held on suspicion of aggravated assault on a peace officer with a dangerous instrument.
