HAMMOND, La. (AP) - Collection of back sales taxes produced a pleasant surprise for Hammond officials in February.

Mayor Mayson Foster told the City Council this past week that he was astonished when he received a report that sales tax collections in February were 36 percent higher than the same month a year ago.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1gA0WzA ) the mayor asked tax collectors for an explanation.

Foster says an audit of sales tax receipts showed the city was owed about $600,000 from past collection periods and the money was paid in February.

He says sales tax collections remain strong in the city.
