CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) - Police in Chandler say an officer has been arrested after allegedly trying to strangle his girlfriend.
Court documents indicate 42-year-old Scott Allen Pennell turned himself in to the police department Thursday over allegations he assaulted his live-in girlfriend.
According to the documents, the woman told officers they fought at their Chandler home Wednesday after she found him opening her mail.
The victim told investigators Pennell shoved her, got on top of her and then tried to strangle her. She alleges he let go after she bit his hand.
He reportedly left but returned the next morning and the victim called police.
Police say Pennell wasn’t there when they arrived.
The 16-year veteran faces several felony charges and is on paid leave.
It was unclear Saturday if Pennell had an attorney.
