CHICO, Calif. (AP) - A Yuba County Sheriff’s deputy is suspected of beating an unconscious man in Chico and threatening a witness who called 911.

The Chico Enterprise-Record reports (https://bit.ly/1dm2Jhk) 31-year-old Nelson Ned Magana was arrested on suspicion of battery and dissuading a witness on Tuesday.

Butte County prosecutors said the deputy was believed to be visiting Chico for St. Patrick’s Day when he got involved in a fight with a 30-year-old man in a restaurant bathroom.

Witnesses said Magana kicked the man while he was unconscious and was about to stomp on the victim’s head when people intervened.

Magana is suspected of threatening a witness who followed him while calling 911.

The deputy, who posted a $150,000 bail, has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation into the incident.
