CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey’s top court has agreed to hear a case on whether it was OK for Camden to dissolve its police force and bring in a new county-run department without voter approval.
The state Supreme Court announced Thursday that it was taking up the case.
Arguments have not yet been scheduled in the case pressed by a group of city activists.
Lower courts have cleared the unconventional move that freed the city of a pricey union contract in a move designed to get more officers on the street. The former police union opposed the move.
The transition to a Camden County-run city police force was completed May 1 and officials say crime has decreased since then.
