TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a dog that mauled a toddler in Tempe has been euthanized and also tested for rabies.

Tempe police said the 9-month-old girl suffered severe head injuries after being left alone for a brief time Tuesday.

The toddler remains hospitalized in critical condition.

A spokeswoman for the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control says the 95-pound Akita named Bellah was euthanized Friday and sent to the state lab for rabies testing.

The test results should be known in a few days.

The toddler’s family asked that the 8-year-old dog be tested and euthanized.

The dog also was involved in an attack in which an 8-year-old girl suffered facial injuries in 2012.
