FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - A Fresno police detective has said he’s not guilty of taking a $20,000 bribe from a suspected drug dealer.
KFSN-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1mlvSvy ) that Derik Carson Kumagai, a 40-year-old vice intelligence squad detective in the Fresno Police Department, pleaded not guilty in court to federal charges of conspiracy, bribery and extortion.
Kumagai was arrested Tuesday, and a judge released him from jail after Wednesday’s court hearing, saying the detective did not pose a risk of running from the charges. He was required to give up his passport.
Prosecutors accuse Kumagai of accepting the bribe in exchange for making a drug dealer a paid police informant. Kumagai remains on paid leave until his criminal case is resolved.
